What the labor charge buys
Hanging a sectional door correctly is a half-day of skilled work even when every part is in the box:
- Setting and plumbing vertical track, then leveling horizontal track off the header
- Stacking and hinging sections square in the opening
- Installing and winding torsion springs to the door's exact weight, the step that puts DIYers in emergency rooms
- Cabling, balancing, and setting spring tension so the door floats at half-open
- Reconnecting the opener, resetting travel limits and force, and safety-testing reversal
Add old-door tear-out and haul-away (agree on that up front) and any framing surprises, and you can see why there is an honest spread between the simplest job and the hardest one.
The catches nobody mentions at the store checkout
We install customer-supplied doors regularly and gladly, but experience says three things go wrong often enough to plan for:
- Incomplete kits. Boxed doors frequently ship without springs matched to the assembled weight, or with track for different headroom than your garage has. Discovering that mid-install means a second trip and a stalled opening. Photograph your box labels and send them when you book; we can usually spot gaps in advance.
- Wrong-size ordering. Online buyers measure the old door instead of the opening. Older garages in Bethany, The Village and Capitol Hill areas hide odd sizes like 15-8 and 8-9 behind trim, and a door that is two inches wrong is a return, not an adjustment.
- Split warranties. The manufacturer covers the product through wherever you bought it; the installer covers workmanship only. If a panel is defective, the claim runs through the retailer, and freight-damaged sections are on whoever signed for delivery. When we supply and install, all of that lands on us instead, which is worth pricing before assuming the separate route is cheaper.
Run both numbers before you commit
The DIY-purchase route makes real sense in specific cases: a genuine clearance find, a specialty door a dealer cannot source, or a shop building where cosmetics are irrelevant. But do the full arithmetic first.
