Routines that earn their keep

The garage door is one of the best automation triggers in the house because it fires exactly when someone arrives or leaves, no motion-sensor guesswork. Setups our customers around the metro actually use:

• Arrival lighting: door opens after sunset, the garage interior light, kitchen path lights, and porch light come on. Ten seconds of setup in HomeKit or Alexa, and it removes the fumble through a dark utility room.
• Winter arrival: door opens between 4 and 7 p.m., thermostat kicks up two degrees. On a 28°F January evening in Edmond, the house is warm by the time coats are off.
• Announcements: Echo or HomePod announces "garage opened" while you are home alone or the kids are due back. Simple and surprisingly reassuring.
• Camera bookmarking: door event starts a camera clip, giving you video of every arrival without recording all day.
• Leaving routine: door closes and everyone's phones have left the geofence, so lights off, thermostat eco, alarm armed. The close event confirms the departure a location trigger can miss.

Getting the door state into your platform

The route depends on what is on your ceiling:

• Genie Aladdin Connect: easiest path; native SmartThings and Alexa links expose open/close events directly.
• Any opener + retrofit controller: Meross and ismartgate publish state to HomeKit, Alexa, and Google; Tailwind covers Alexa and Google. This is the fix for myQ's missing integrations.
• Any opener + cheap sensor: a low-cost Zigbee or Z-Wave tilt sensor on the top panel tells your hub the door state without touching the opener at all. You cannot command the door this way, but for triggering lights it is all you need.
• LiftMaster/Chamberlain + ratgdo: the power-user route, full state and control inside Home Assistant with no cloud in the loop.

Two design rules that keep routines from backfiring

First, never automate an unattended door close from a lighting platform; closes belong to systems that enforce the safety beep and photo-eye check, as covered in the auto-close answer. Lights, sounds, and thermostats are fair game; door movement is not. Second, put a time condition on noisy routines, or the 6 a.m. trash run will announce itself through every speaker in the house. One mechanical footnote: automation multiplies how often you notice your door's behavior, and a door that shakes the camera image or opens with a bang is broadcasting a problem. Slow, smooth travel comes from balanced springs and healthy rollers, the things a routine tune-up restores.
