How do I remove the previous homeowner's access from my smart garage opener?

Why this belongs on your move-in checklist

You changed the house locks; the garage deserves the same. Think through who might still have access to a typical OKC resale: the sellers' two cars with HomeLink programmed, a remote left with the neighbor for plant watering, the keypad code the sellers gave every contractor during their 2022 remodel, their teenager's phone on the myQ account, and the buyer's agent who knew the PIN for showings. None of those people are likely threats, and every one of them can open your garage tonight. Closing that list costs nothing but a few minutes on a stepladder.

The full wipe, step by step

• 1. Erase the radio memory. On the motor head, press and hold the learn button (colored square button, usually under the light lens) until the adjacent LED turns off, typically 6-10 seconds. This dumps every remote, keypad, and HomeLink pairing at once. Genie units use a similar long-hold on the program button.
• 2. Re-pair what is yours. Press learn once, then press each of your remote buttons within 30 seconds. Repeat for each remote and your cars' HomeLink.
• 3. Reset the keypad. Follow the keypad's programming sequence to set a fresh PIN. If the keypad is a weathered fixed-code relic with DIP switches, replace it (an inexpensive swap) and read why fixed-code gear should retire.
• 4. Take over the smart side. If the sellers had myQ or Aladdin Connect, ask them to delete the device from their account; if they are unreachable, reset the opener's Wi-Fi settings from the motor head menu (or hold the settings gear until it beeps) and add the device to your own new account. The platform detaches it from the old account during re-registration. Then set up alerts and two-factor login while you are in the app.

Bonus item most people miss: check the garage wall for a forgotten interior release or a second opener in a storage bay, and pull the manual for both. We find surprise second doors on move-in service calls all the time, especially in Moore and Norman homes with shop extensions.

While you are on the ladder: a 5-minute health check

Since the previous owners' maintenance history moved out with them, give the hardware a quick once-over. Door balance: pull the red release cord and lift the door halfway; it should stay put, not slam or fly up (if it moves on its own, springs need attention through our spring service). Photo eyes: block the beam while closing and confirm the door reverses. Rollers and cables: look for frayed strands and cracked wheels.
