What data does my smart garage door opener collect about me?

What the data reveals, and who sees it

A garage event log looks boring until you read it as a pattern: leaves 7:40 a.m. weekdays, home 5:55 p.m., gone most Saturday mornings, out of town the second week of July. That is a burglary planning document, a custody-dispute exhibit, and a marketing profile all in one table. In practice, three parties can see some or all of it:

• The manufacturer, under its privacy policy. Chamberlain (myQ) and Genie both describe using data for service, product improvement, and in some cases advertising and partnerships. Policies change; the data already collected stays collected.
• Anyone with your account credentials, which is why a reused password is the biggest practical leak. Enable two-factor authentication; every major platform offers it now.
• Law enforcement and civil litigants via legal process. Smart-home logs, garage doors included, have appeared in court cases. Not a reason to panic, just a reason to know the log exists.

Dialing collection down without losing the features

• Skip geofencing if you do not use it. Location permission is the single most sensitive grant. Timer-based auto-close (covered in the auto-close answer) delivers most of the benefit with zero location tracking.
• Review app permissions annually. The opener app does not need your contacts, photos, or precise location while closed, and most run fine with notifications only.
• Think twice before adding a camera to the opener account. A standalone camera on a platform you already trust keeps your video and door data in separate silos.

• Delete the account when you sell the house, not just the app. Deleting the app leaves the account and its history alive.
