How do I find out what brand my current garage door is?

Where the labels hide

With the door closed and you standing inside the garage, work through these spots with a flashlight:

• End stiles: the vertical steel caps on each end of every section. CHI, Amarr, Clopay, and most others stamp or sticker a logo, model number, or date code here, usually on the top or second section.
• Back of the top section: manufacturers place build labels where weather cannot reach, often near a corner. Insulated doors may carry the label on the backer skin.
• Section edges: open the door halfway and look at the exposed top edge of a section; some brands ink-stamp the steel itself.
• Spring warning tag: the yellow or white caution label near the torsion springs sometimes carries the door maker's name rather than just the installer's.
• Installer sticker: the phone-number sticker on the door or track identifies who hung it; a call to that company with your address often pulls the original order, brand and color code included.

One myth to clear up: the name on the opener rail is meaningless here. A LiftMaster or Genie badge overhead identifies the motor, made by a completely different company than the door, as we explain in whether door and opener brands should match.

No label? The door still tells on itself

Every manufacturer's embossing dies are distinct, the way tire treads are. Take three photos in good light: the full door from the driveway, a close-up of one panel's woodgrain or emboss texture, and the horizontal joint where two sections meet. Panel proportions, rib patterns, joint profiles, and window frame styles narrow the field fast; our estimators and repair techs identify unlabeled doors from photos weekly, usually within minutes. Age helps too: a date code anywhere on the hardware brackets the era, and some brands changed panel designs in known years.

Why this chore is worth ten minutes

Brand identification is mostly about money after a storm. When hail crosses the metro and an adjuster approves two damaged sections, knowing the door is, say, a CHI model in Desert Tan means we can order matching sections and close the claim for a fraction of a full replacement; an unidentified orphan door often forces whole-door replacement instead.
