What hidden fees show up on garage door quotes?
The usual ones are trip or diagnostic fees, haul-away and disposal of the old door, hardware that was excluded from the headline number, after-hours surcharges, and framing repair discovered on installation day. None are inherently dishonest — the problem is when they are not on the quote you compared.
The common ones
- Trip or diagnostic fee. Charged to come out, sometimes credited toward the work and sometimes not. Ask before booking — service call charges in the metro.
- Haul-away and disposal. A door is bulky waste. Confirm it is included — old door disposal.
- Hardware exclusions. Track, rollers, hinges, cables, and springs, quoted separately or reused — what should be included.
- After-hours surcharge. Common in the trade. We do not charge one — night and weekend fees.
- Fuel or environmental surcharges, added as a percentage at invoicing.
The legitimate surprise
Framing is the honest exception. Jamb and header condition frequently cannot be fully assessed until the old door and stop molding come off, and rot behind trim is common in older metro homes. A quote that says "jamb replacement if required, at a stated rate" is being straightforward; one that is silent about it is setting up a conversation on installation day.
Ask how it will be handled and what it would cost if needed. The underlying issue is in rotted framing and new jambs with a replacement.
How to compare quotes properly
Insist on itemization. A single bottom-line number cannot be compared to anything, and the difference between two quotes is nearly always in scope rather than margin. Line items should cover the door and its specification, springs and their cycle rating, track and hardware, labor, haul-away, and anything conditional.
Then compare like against like. A quote reusing track and springs is not competing with one replacing them — the method is in comparing garage door quotes and the questions in what to ask an installer.
Questions that surface everything
"Is this the total I will pay if nothing unexpected is found?" "What would make it go up, and by how much?" "Is haul-away included?" "Is there a trip fee, and is it credited?" "Are new springs, cables, rollers, and track included?" Five questions, asked before booking, close nearly every gap.
